PwC UK doubles down on in-person learning, welcoming its largest ever summer student cohort

The programme will offer PwC’s interns the opportunity to work with charities and social enterprises.

PwC welcomes its largest ever in-person student cohort as part of its paid summer internship programme; 610 interns will join PwC, in offices across the UK, throughout July and August. The internship programme offers students insight into PwC's business and culture, equipping them with work experience and employability skills, helping build their networks and collaborating with both graduate trainees and experienced professionals on real client projects.

The programme is for students in their final or penultimate year of study and offers fully paid, on the job experience. Varying in length, from four to ten weeks, with the interns expected to spend 40-60% of their time in the office or at client sites in line with PwC’s hybrid working policy.

PwC is also actively engaged in a variety of early career programmes designed to increase representation and work experience for young people and under-represented groups. This includes a summer work experience programme which offers a full week’s paid in-person work experience for over 200 year 12 (or equivalent) students from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Similarly, our Women in Business programme offers a three day paid programme to attract female talent to the firm. This year, the firm will also launch its Career Launch work experience programme, a week long in-person paid work experience in Belfast and Manchester.

Ian Elliott, Chief People Officer at PwC comments:

“It’s brilliant to be welcoming our largest ever internship cohort this summer. We understand that students who missed out on face-to-face activities during the pandemic are keen to learn skills such as networking and presenting. That’s why this year we’ve got an increased focus on face-to-face training, to ensure that the students we work with have more exposure to in-person activities, our people and our clients.”

Integrating social responsibility into the programme

This year project teams will be paired with a social enterprise or charity to help tackle an important issue they face and produce an output or solution that the organisation can use.

The interns will also be given a volunteering day, where they will have the opportunity to work with a range of organisations including Canal and River Trust, Marine Conservation Society and Trees for Cities. This aligns with the firm's purpose and wider community outreach programme.

Ian Elliott, Chief People Officer at PwC adds:

“As a business with offices across the UK, supporting our local communities has always been important to us. We want our interns to see and experience this first hand, especially since our research shows that younger generations entering the workforce feel particularly strongly about making a societal contribution.”
