The employer reporting and withholding requirements associated with global employment and incentive based taxes are complex. Regulations are inconsistent across the globe, with work and pay practices changing regularly. In addition there is plenty of focus from tax authorities on these topics given that over half of the total tax take in many countries tends to come from employment and working related taxes (e.g. income tax, social security, and other taxes such as benefit taxes).
These factors mean that complying with the global tax rules that impact a company's workforce is really challenging for companies of all sizes. Staying up to date with changes in legislation and practice across the globe, especially when there aren’t always subject matter experts in every location, can create reactive rather than proactive management. For some companies, managing compliance in this area is one of their biggest challenges for tax teams.
