Tackling complex people issues to drive rapid reinvention and sustained success

All organisations are facing disruptive challenges in the face of slowing growth, rising costs and changing consumer behaviour. And complex problems emerge as they review their operating model, technological capabilities and how they do business.

In the face of these challenges, your business needs problem-solving, at pace. It also needs to implement solutions, while managing the interdependencies and wider impact across the organisation. Your business is therefore looking to you as an HR team for the insight and support it needs to tackle the resulting workforce challenges and realise its strategic ambitions.

“Today’s world is throwing up new challenges – from compliance with global regulation and fairness in the workplace to attracting and motivating a talent base that is more complex than ever. Technology and systems do some of the heavy lifting but organisations need a partner they can trust to solve multidisciplinary problems.”

Alastair Woods, Workforce Transformation Partner, PwC UK

Whether it is building future skills, designing incentives through to the legal and contractual dimensions of the workforce, the breadth of our Workforce team at PwC means we can help solve complex technical problems. If we hone in on some key areas that clients are grappling with…

Evolving workforce

The workforce is more diverse than ever, while everything from employee recognition and progression to retirement are evolving. Our recent Hopes and Fears Survey 2024 shines a light on the changing needs of this new workforce and how this varies by age and sector. We’re working with organisations to overhaul job architecture for a skills first organisation and navigate the increasing complexity around pay transparency. We’re also supporting on location strategy (including the tax implications) as organisations seek to reduce costs and mobilise talent.

Streamlining HR

We draw on our Saratoga data and the business strategy to help clients evolve the HR function. Our work with the HR team at Capita shows why a clear focus on business goals are so important in defining the solution and delivering the benefits. In this case, reliance on disparate legacy technology systems meant that it was difficult enough to figure out how many people worked at the company at any given time, let alone forecast recruitment demands with sufficient insight and confidence. With our support - from technology implementation through to development of streamlined HR operations, Capita not only benefits from the faster and more efficient recruitment processes it needs to grow, but also the data to make more reliable and informed decisions about its workforce.

Addressing productivity

Pay, benefits and pensions are areas that we are seeing evolve as part of the renewed focus on productivity. Making these work so that they drive growth and create value requires systems thinking. And organisations need to keep an eye on workforce risks and compliance.

The key to making these solutions work is a combination of close partnership with clients and the ability to bring in people with a wide breadth of experience and expertise. The starting point is getting a real understanding of our client’s ambitions and the issues they face. We can then develop collaborative solutions that draw together and orchestrate the input of people with expertise in particular industries and their markets, who work alongside HR specialists, technologists and alliance partners to tackle a range of complex workforce challenges.

“I've worked on many transformation programmes in my career and the foundation for success is bringing together two organisations who really understand each other and can work in true partnership. A perfect example of this partnership is when an HR leader can pick up the phone and say, ‘we need help on this project, we need a solution tomorrow’, and our team can jump into action because we understand each other so well. That's just so rewarding for both us and for our clients.”
