Digital transformation and the use of technology is a core component of any business’ growth plans, with investment in these areas critical to success. However, our Reframing Tax study shows that tax functions can often be left behind on this journey. Not including them in conversations about transformation causes organisations to miss out on significant value whilst also exposing themselves to risk, something we set out to prevent.

Setting the scene

This year, PwC launched ‘Reframing Tax’, our go-to-market drive to bring to life what our New Equation strategy means for our core tax business.

By reframing the role of tax operations, with a focus on the strategic value they can deliver, tax has an opportunity to create lasting, organisation-wide benefits.

People responsible for tax are being excluded from conversations about transformation or decisions around technology, which results in a lack of understanding and sees organisations missing out on significant value.

Our work

Reframing Tax reflects our market research, finding that organisations want their tax operations to transform and to use the appropriate tax technology.  But when it comes to making decisions, those responsible for tax are struggling to influence decision makers.

Through a mix of social media, email marketing, in-person engagement, events and paid advertising, we sought to transform this thinking.

In September 2023, we held Reframing Tax Live, a virtual event with almost 1,000 tax and finance professionals. The event focused on an agenda around sustainable growth, rethinking risk, embracing transformation, and creating and protecting value in deals.

The event provided attendees with exclusive insights from PwC experts and technology providers, to help them take the next step towards unlocking the organisation-wide benefits of a digitally transformed tax function. Since the event, we have been speaking with clients about how to transform their organisational structure to ensure tax operations are involved in the digital transformation process.

“PwC is playing a pivotal role in enabling the governance and technological transformation of the tax function. Through the Reframing Tax workshop they have demonstrated an ability to 'get under the bonnet' of the tax function, to aid us in enhancing current best practices and building resilience in addressing certain challenges. We greatly value the contribution from the PwC team and welcome their continued support on our transformation journey.”

“As organisations transform, the questions they need to answer also evolve, for example: how to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence or transform their supply chains as they respond to ESG. The complexity of these issues requires those responsible for tax to create strategic insight and value and, in doing so, help organisations make judgement calls.”
