Non-Executive Director, Chairman and Trustee
PwC 1997 - 2016

It’s all about strategy. Whether in the PwC environment or out on the sports field and who would know that better than Richard Sykes, NED and PwC Alumnus who is actively involved with the Middlesex County Cricket Club. Having a wide interest in sports, being an active hockey player, cricket fan and golfer he is an avid advocate for team sports in particular.

In this video, Richard tells us about his career journey after being with the firm for 40 years and how his experienced leadership skills translate to his passions now including having the opportunity to work directly with sporting bodies and be involved in the governance review of cricket in 2012.

Richard also shares his views on the power of strong bonds and relationships and how the ability to draw on contacts and networks that he built within the firm continue to be valuable with his roles today.

I am Richard Sykes, I retired from PwC last summer after spending 40 years with the Firm, most of that time was in audit and then latterly I was a Global Relationship Partner on some of our big non-audit clients as well as focusing on governance. These days, I am a Non-Executive Director for England hockey. I run Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club, which is where we are today. I am on the board of Middlesex Cricket, and then I have got a small non-executive role with the consulting engineering partnership. The most amazing day of my career was back in 2012, when I presented the findings of the governance review into cricket to the world cricket committee at Lords in front of a number of my boyhood heroes. I probably should have taken my autograph album out along with me. I left the Lords on that day thinking my life cannot get any better from a work point of view. One of the things that I have noticed since retiring from the Firm and moving into my non-executive career is that the networks I built was within the Firm, continue in my non-executive world today, weather I am involved with the cricket, England hockey, or my more professional non-executive roles, the ability to draw on contacts and networks that I have always had remain just as useful if not more important these days.
