Our stories

Our charity cycling challenge

June 2019 saw Ride the Nation, our charity cycle challenge, taking to the road again for the third time. The event connects all offices in the PwC UK network by means of a cycling relay, including visiting our colleagues in the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland, in just one month.

Setting the scene

490 staff. A combined total of 42,997 miles. Climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest 85 times. In the UK summertime - in other words, every season imaginable!

That is what our team of intrepid cyclists accomplished during this year’s epic Ride The Nation challenge. Over the course of June, the national riders, supported by colleagues from offices right across the UK, on bikes and with bake sales, raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to support the PwC Foundation and projects run by our charity partners - Wellbeing of Women, UK Youth, the Samaritans and Beyond Food.

How we helped

To date, over £400,000 has been raised through our three bi-annual Ride the Nation events, with £100,000 contributed during the 2019 tour. It’s thanks to the efforts of hundreds of people who help us to fundraise, and the backing of the firm and our commercial sponsors which enables the event to take place.

“It doesn't matter what grade you are or what job you do at PwC, everyone has the opportunity to be a part of Ride the Nation and make a difference to all the amazing charities we support.”

Leighton Mutel Smith, Ride the Nation Leader

Making a difference

Ride The Nation is a labour of love for two of our people - Leighton and Chantal - who’ve been running it since 2015. Each tour requires a herculean effort, with many hours of preparation and training. And it is incredibly demanding for the people who commit to being our national riders.

But it is also rewarding. It’s a demonstration of our values as a firm, showing that anything, no matter how big the idea may at first seem, is possible when we believe and work together.
