The role of the private sector in the green transition will be substantial - without the required finance, middle-income countries may struggle to meet their climate commitments.
Low-carbon businesses from these countries often find it hard to access the finance they need. The CFA breaks down barriers and encourages investment in low-carbon projects.
The CFA is funded by International Climate Finance, through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It was established as part of the UK's support for climate action, to help middle income countries meet their climate targets.
PwC has led the delivery of the Climate Finance Accelerator for almost three years, and has supported over 100 businesses internationally through our global network. In March 2023, we used our convening power to deliver a showcase CFA London event which gave fifteen businesses, from Africa, Asia and South America, the opportunity to participate in workshops with investors.
The London Event was attended by 450 representatives from Government, the City of London Corporation, sustainability professionals, and investors. The low carbon projects presented covered a range of sectors including sustainable energy, efficient housing and nature based solutions.
Over the course of four days there were twelve presentations and panels that considered the challenges and opportunities of investing in low carbon projects from the perspective of investors, development teams and policy makers, as well as giving project teams the opportunity to receive practical feedback on how to make their presentations more attractive to investors. The value of the event was described by a project team as giving the opportunity “to engage with and raise capital from climate-focused investors, benefit from capacity building programs, and expand our market reach”.
“Our participation in the programme has enabled us to engage with and raise capital from climate-focused investors, benefit from capacity building programs, and expand our market reach.”
Feedback from a CFA participant
The event introduced fifteen low carbon initiatives, seeking $500 million of funding, to City investors, provided practical feedback on presentations, and fostered a mutual understanding of the barriers to accessing finance, as well as enabling long term collaboration opportunities.
To date the CFA has helped eight businesses secure $168 million of investment, and we are looking forward to building on the success of the 2023 CFA London Event, and continue to help more businesses access much needed finance for low carbon projects.
