Outcome

Solidified our position as a key player in regional and global climate action

As leaders gathered for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, PwC joined the discussions to help advance meaningful action to address climate and nature challenges. Solving these twin crises requires deep collaboration across all sectors and geographies, and PwC’s Net Zero Economy Index 2023 and the UN Global Stocktake synthesis report underscore the urgency needed.

Setting the scene

COP28 brought together world leaders and industry experts in the United Arab Emirates for crucial climate discussions. With a major presence across the Middle East, including in Dubai, PwC hosted hundreds of delegates at a number of events, using regional and global partnerships to drive awareness of, and engagement in, the sustainability agenda. Our focus on the regional progress being made on investment in renewable energy, climate finance and green technology highlighted the Middle East's important role in the net zero transition.

"We're proud to support the UAE’s leadership in uniting global efforts at COP28. The UAE’s $100 million contribution to the Loss & Damage fund and the commitment of AED one trillion in sustainable finance by 2030 mark significant milestones for our region. As a community of solvers, we engaged in nearly 100 events that helped turn climate ambition into actionable, purpose-driven plans."

Our work

We had three main objectives in terms of our investment and involvement in COP28:

  1. To play our part - underscoring our commitment to not only supporting the region's shift towards cleaner energy but also to being a proactive participant in shaping the global narrative on climate action.
  2. To connect with clients - themes we chose to focus on centred on the areas we know clients are most involved in, with a regional angle where our knowledge can be differentiated.
  3. To inspire our people - engaging colleagues and, in particular, our young people, in a range of environmental activities and initiatives in the lead up to, and during, COP itself.
