Outcome

Enabled National Grid ESO to comply with European body

As the operator responsible for the UK’s electricity supply, National Grid ESO has a fundamental role to play in the functioning of the country. Ensuring compliance in its technology controls helps protect the entire energy system in the UK. Our role was to work with National Grid ESO to submit the correct and responsible information to a European body (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity) on the standard and operation of its internal controls.

Setting the scene

National Grid ESO shares information and data with its counterparts in other European countries but, to connect to a European data platform, it is required to comply with a comprehensive list of technology controls to protect sensitive data assets for electricity network operators across Europe.

Our work

PwC has led the annual control testing review activities for National Grid ESO since 2021. Each year, we engage more than 40 individuals at the client over a short time period to ensure our work can be delivered quickly and to the highest levels of quality. This also involves helping the client develop its remediation plan for gaps so it can improve its controls and satisfy the European body in a short space of time.

We also spent time with the European body to help evolve its approach where there are efficiencies or opportunities to strengthen the processes. This has led to significant changes to the body’s approach and ensures that our client is therefore fairly represented in the control environment it operates in. Ultimately, our work allows National Grid ESO to both give confidence to the regulator and help improve its control environment maturity around protecting sensitive technology and data assets.

“Being able to help National Grid ESO to maintain and confirm robust controls around our critical national infrastructure demonstrates our purpose in helping build trust.”
