Job Title: Assurance Senior Associate (I help to review financial statements)

Where I work: London Audit Team, In London

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • To help me review financial statements and the underlying data that make up the total figures on the statements.
  • To help me interpret and analyse financial figures and information.
  • To measure performance and identify trends that affect the clients/ companies.

My highlight of my job so far

  • Through work I get the opportunity to meet lots of really interesting and intelligent people which means that I am constantly learning and growing.
  • I managed to get a couple of trips abroad and I was able to visit Paris, Texas and Ohio. It was great to see how people’s working habits differ compared to London, and I go free trip!
  • Being part of PwC means I can get involved in programmes designed to help me contribute to my community y getting involved in lots of school/ volunteering initiatives

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 14 year old self?

Take some time to think about what you enjoy learning about/ doing and base your future goals around that. And appreciate being 14 and being around your friends but also try to be a positive influence on people around you

Where I work: Manchester, but sometimes Liverpool, London and Warsaw (Poland) too!

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • To keep on top of budget tracking for our project team that includes team members in both the UK and Poland
  • For revenue forecasting so that Partners/Directors know vaguely how much money will be coming through to our projects each month/ quarter
  • Keeping on top of estimations for our requirements that we’ll be delivering to our clients

My highlight of my job so far

  • Delivery managing a £1m+ project with a PwC team of 12 (UK and Poland-based)
  • Being able to travel across various cities in the UK as well as New York, Paris and Warsaw with work! I’m also going to Nice in April
  • Getting involved in ‘extracurricular’ activities such as schools and universities outreach, mentoring, etc.

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

Choose to pursue a career in what you love - people told me the same thing but I still didn’t fully listen to it. I loved my degree in Mechanical Engineering, but the work I do now in Consulting is so much more ‘me’ than Engineering was, and I could’ve chosen literally any degree I liked to do the job I’m doing now

Where I work: Operate - Tech Solutions, London

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use maths to generate reports to give to clients, advising them of project status updates and progress.
  • I use maths to help me estimate and prioritise tasks which is helpful and lets colleagues know how long a particular item of work will take.

My highlight of my job so far

  • Whilst I have not been with the firm for very long, I have already been engaged in a large scale Government project which was hugely successful

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 14 year old self?

You may panic at this crossroads of your life, but try to think about what you like doing now and what you might want to do in the future. It may take a lot of hard work and perseverance to get where you want to be, but things will eventually fall into place and become a lot easier after that.

Job Title: Tax Manager

Where I work: In the Tax Reporting & Strategy team, in London

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use maths to calculate how much our clients need to pay in taxes
  • I use maths to create spreadsheet to keep track of all the fees the client pays to PwC as I work with many countries and reconcile against what we budgeted for in our proposal/contract
  • I use maths to create internal budget spreadsheets to understand how profitable a client is for the firm

My highlight of my job so far

  • Going on international assignment to London to learn new skills - and staying there in the end!
  • Managing a £12m+ contracts with a very large Swiss Pharma company and flying day trips to Basel
  • Being able to travel across various cities in the UK as well as India, Switzerland, Ireland...
  • Having the chance to get involved in lots of volunteering opportunities such as social mobility, schools, etc.

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

You might not know what you ‘want’ to do yet, so choose instead what you ‘like’ to do. Most importantly, understand what you are good at and what you find easy doing - is it reading? numbers? - that will really shape who you’ll become one day. Follow your personal inclinations, always.

Where I work: Audit, Reading office

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use Maths when using excel to create formulas for audit testing
  • I use Maths to keep a track of deadlines and ensure my work is being performed in line with the client budget.

My highlight of my job so far

  • My proudest moment is when I opened up to my colleagues through a work campaign focused on social mobility regarding my background and route into PwC
  • I was surprised of the various activities I can get involved with at PwC (varying from sport, social and volunteering activities)

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

To not worry too much about the future and about doing things wrong – as you can always learn from mistakes and that’s what helps you improve on yourself.

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • To look through trends in numbers, identify patterns in financial information and spot any outliers for further investigation
  • Review and check clients’ calculations and reconciliations they have performed, to ensure they are not making any errors

My highlight of my job so far

  • The variety and number of clients I have been able to work with - I have been able to learn so much about products and services we use in everyday life!
  • The amount I have learnt, the leadership skills and I have developed and the increase in confidence it has given me

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 14 or 17 year old self?

No matter what you see around you or what anyone tells, you can be anything you want to be. Whatever you want to achieve is possible and there is not a single thing you cannot do if you put in the hard work and effort. Do not limit yourself, stay positive, dream big and always give yourself the best chance to succeed.

Where I work: I am based in the FS and Deals Pensions Team in London.

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use skills learned from my Maths A Level to help model cost analysis for Pension Administrators and systems providers.

My highlight of my job so far

  • Since joining the firm I have enjoyed taking part in the wider PwC world, starting to volunteer for the Samaritans, working as a Global Mobility Champion and joining the One Young World Committee.
  • I was surprised by how much trust I was given so quickly to participate in projects, meet clients and impact on deliverables

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

It was not too long ago but I have definitely learned some things whilst at University and beyond. One piece of advice would be to keep at something you truly enjoy and invest in your happiness.

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use maths to analyse data within hospitals and utilise tools such as Excel, Alteryx and Power BI to calculate key performance indicators and present results.
  • I use maths to create teamwide trackers and tools in order for the team to operate efficiently and effectively, allowing more time for valuable client facing interactions
  • Other uses include tracking budgets, forecasting revenue and developing client models

My highlight of my job so far

  • My team winning the Consulting Innovation Advantage award and the PwC Spotlight award for Intelligent Digital in 2018
  • Learning how to code in Python and using other cool analytical tools such as Alteryx
  • Working on one of the largest health transformation projects in Saudi Arabia and getting to travel around the Middle East with colleagues

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

Please try not to get disheartened if you face any form of rejection and keep chasing your dreams... I got rejected from PwC 4 times before receiving my job offer and I am so pleased at where I am today, so please don’t give up!

Job Title: Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) Senior Associate

Where I work: In the GRC team in London

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use maths on my projects to maintain spreadsheets that keep track of all the fees the client should pay (and has already paid) to PwC as we have multiple income streams through the work that we deliver on projects. I will then reconcile this against what we have budgeted for in contracts to make sure we are still on track to make our targets.
  • I use maths to analyse data and develop insights and recommendations for the client

My highlight of my job so far

  • Creating an insight dashboard for the client which helped them better understand their data in a visually appealing way.
  • Even though I work in GRC, I’m able to work in areas outside of my immediate team and develop other skills.
  • I looked after 4 interns on our Women in Business programme which I found to be such a rewarding experience.

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

Whilst it is important to have a (rough) idea of what you want to do later on in life, enjoy the time that you have now and don’t worry too much about the future. You can plan life ahead to the most minute details but your plan will definitely change when the time comes, and that’s okay because everything happens for a reason.

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • My current role doesn’t necessarily require me to apply the maths skills I learn at school but allows me to bring an analytical approach to my way of working. It does help me to scan through large sets of information quickly, make sense of numbers and look for detail in everything I do to ensure precision.

My highlight of my job so far

  • The highlight of my job so far is how quickly I’ve been given the responsibility to be independent and take charge in client work. I have had the opportunity to use my discretion and build meaningful relationships with clients.
  • Volunteering and getting involved in giving back to the community has meant so much to me. I love getting involved in community service and the wide array of events and initiations have given me such a great platform to be able to serve.

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 14 year old self?

Go for subjects that you’re genuinely interested in as opposed to what everyone says you will need. We all bring different skill sets to work and at the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and finding your passion in what really interests you

How I use Maths in my work now:

To forecast and manage different aspect of Projects:

  • Number of people required for a project
  • How long it will take to complete a project
  • How much it will cost to complete a projects.

My highlight of my job so far

  • Working with PwC, I was engaged to work with one of UK leaning banks to create a document for monitoring and controlling projects
  • Working on behalf of PwC with “Beyond food”; helping people at risk of or who have been homeless to gain useful life skillss

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 14 year old self?

As someone who immigrated to the UK from Nigeria, I would tell my 14-year-old self to;

  • Focus on education/training – this is the greatest asset you can achieve
  • Expect challenges – they will only make you stronger and don't be ashamed or afraid to ask for help
  • Be authentic – be yourself, don’t do things because others are doing it, do it because you want to do it.

How I use Maths in my work now:

  • I use maths to analyse data and draw conclusions. It taught me how to think logically and solve problems which are two key skills you need in any job

My highlight of my job so far

  • CrGoing on a trip to Calais to volunteer at a refugee centre. This was a great opportunity to give back to the international community and support people are less fortunate than us
  • Travelling to different cities for training and client work

If I went back in time what piece of advice would I give my 17 year old self?

There are a lot of opportunities available for school leavers so do plenty of research and ask around. Don’t feel pressured to study a course with a clear career path like nursing or dentistry, it’s more important to study a subject you enjoy and are passionate about!
