Tax by day, lambing by my coffee break

Meet Henry, a Senior Associate who originally joined our Private Business team as a higher apprentice in 2019, before moving permanently to our Deals Tax team at the start of 2021, allowing him to broaden his knowledge and build on his existing experiences.

“In my current role, I assist clients with pre and post deal advisory services, besides managing any tax compliance or consulting projects they have. I’m also studying towards the ACA/CTA professional accountancy qualification.”

When Henry first joined the firm in 2019, he studied for and completed the ATT qualification, and has now moved on to study on the ACA/CTA joint programme. Having had the opportunity to work towards both qualifications is something that Henry really values, and he’s glad to be in a career path that allows him to continuously upskill.

Working in Tax is something that Henry really enjoys - and is vastly different from the career he expected to have when growing up.

“My family’s history is rooted in the agricultural industry, so working at a global firm in an office environment is very different from what I experienced when I was younger! Farming and agriculture is still something I’m passionate about though, and you can often find me at home in Gloucestershire, tending to my flock of sheep.

As the team I sit in are based in London, I’m away from home most weeks. This has meant it’s been slightly more difficult to balance my PwC role with breeding and keeping my sheep. I spoke to a Senior Manager in my team to discuss the option of flexible working in order to balance my lambing commitments for a short time during the spring. My whole team was really supportive and we created a plan around how we could make it work for myself, the team and our clients.”

Here at PwC, our commitment to Empowered Flexibility means our people can decide their most effective working pattern, and the times they work on any given day. It's our commitment to empowering our people to work in a way that works best for them, their teams and their clients, as part of our hybrid working approach.

“Earlier this year, I was able to deliver important project work alongside helping with the delivery of 15 new lambs. I worked remotely for two weeks and flexed my hours each day around the sheep.

It’s times like these that really allow me to appreciate working for a firm like PwC and being able to have an open conversation about altering my working pattern in the short-term, to find a solution that could work well for me and my team. It’s not often you have the opportunity to work for a market leading firm, study towards professional qualifications and also have a great work/life balance.”

When we caught up with Henry, we asked him to share his top advice for anyone considering joining us at PwC. His top tips are:

  1. Make the most out of opportunities that come your way - whether that’s a secondment, working with a new client, or even a day trip to a new office. These experiences are invaluable and will all help you progress in your career and expand your network.

  2. Never stop learning - no matter how long you’ve been in a role, learning and upskilling will help you to develop and grow.

  3. Ensure you have a healthy work-life balance. While not everyone will be rearing sheep like me - make sure you’re able to balance work with what you enjoy the most.
