Driving audit innovation through digital technology

James joined PwC on our graduate Audit programme in 2021 after completing his Economics degree at the University of Bath. We’ve caught up with him nearly a year on, to find out how he’s progressed in his career so far.

“I work in PwC’s Reading Audit practice. I’m currently studying to become a qualified Chartered Accountant, which is an integral part of my graduate programme. I study and complete exams alongside my day-to-day work, which has been both challenging and rewarding.

I’ve also been heavily involved in the ‘Making Quality Easier’ team within the office, which aims to help transform our audits through use of digital tools. Some of the activities I’ve participated in for this project include using new technology and tools on engagements and running drop-in sessions for other associates, to help them understand and implement these tools.”

James’ contributions to the team haven’t gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, he was recognised with the ‘Best Newcomer’ award at the Making Quality Easier awards, which celebrated his commitment to Audit transformation through pioneering the use of digital assets. His workplace successes have also been echoed in his studies - his excellent performance in his accountancy exams has seen him awarded with the Watt’s Prize by the ICAEW and be placed on their Order of Merit.

Here at PwC, we’re proud to be driving audit innovation, with technology at its heart. From exploring new ways of using data to redefining digital collaboration, the combination of tools and how our people work with one another and with clients, helps deliver a greater audit experience.

“During my time at the firm, I’ve become experienced in programmes such as Alteryx and DataSnipper, as well as a variety of other tools. In Audit, the use of digital tools allows us to automate the more repetitive tasks and really focus on adding value and focusing our attention on the areas of the audit that require more judgement.”

Having the opportunity to digitally upskill isn’t the only thing that James enjoys about his role. He’s thrilled to have joined a team that prides itself on camaraderie and builds bonds outside of projects.

“The social aspect of working at PwC has been fantastic. I’m on the Sports and Social committee at the office so being involved in planning events like our summer golf tournament has been a lot of fun. I’m a keen golfer outside of work too, so it’s always great to practise with colleagues.”

With all that James has been involved with during his time at the firm, from upskilling to socials, it’s unsurprising that he’d describe his career with us as “challenging, varied and exciting”.
