Advice to enable a successful career in Capital Projects

Meet Prejay, a Senior Manager in the Capital Projects team within Deals. He shares insight into key skills needed in his role, advice to someone looking to join the team and a glimpse into the people-oriented culture. Here’s his story…

Tell us about your role and one thing that surprised you upon joining the team

I joined the Capital Projects team in 2019 after a friend in the team encouraged me to apply. My biggest surprise since joining PwC has been adapting from an industry where the scope of work is clearly defined, to where the client is reliant on me to identify the issue and resolve it. This has been hugely motivating - I enjoy problem solving and opportunities to create and implement  new ways of working.

What key skill is essential to a successful career in Capital Projects?

Being able to quickly look at client data to uncover potential issues they may have and provide solutions to those problems is a key skill. But, technology has helped enable this - it’s constantly evolving and improving daily processes that are integral to my role. For example, I joined a team where we had to undertake a rapid review on the cost, schedule and risk position of the project. I was given multiple datasets, in different formats and styles which I then used Alteryx to process the data into a consistent format and then Microsoft PowerBi to display and drive insight into the information. Technology enables me to process large volumes of data quicker and to a higher quality whilst producing deeper insights to inform my clients. It has changed the way I work and what I can achieve in a short period of time.

What advice would you give to someone looking to develop those skills or join Capital Projects?

My advice to anyone looking to develop the skills required to join the Capital Projects team is; when working on engagements, to reflect on what analysis or activities resulted in the most impactful client insights, and to establish which of the delivered solutions created the greatest value for the client. This will help to prioritise your efforts when working on future engagements.

Tell us about your life outside of work and how PwC supports you

Having travelled to 30 countries before I turned 30, it's fair to say I’m a very keen traveller.

When we’re not travelling, my partner and I enjoy making the most of London’s diverse restaurants, pubs, museums and attractions. If I’m not doing that, you’ll find me on the football pitch or doing some DIY.

Before I joined the firm, my friends told me about PwC’s people-oriented nature and the career progression opportunities. This stood out to me and now I'm here, I can see firsthand the Care the firm has for its employees:

1. The firm has provided internal and external training in technology and allowed me to complete my APM Project Management qualification. As a result, I’ve increased my technological knowledge, productivity and greater understanding in the management of projects, programmes and portfolios.

2. PwC has empowered all of us to have conversations with our engagement teams about our flexible working needs and what works best for me personally.

I’ve also seen a real shift in inclusion and diversity with leadership demonstrating its importance and encouraging conversations. It makes everyone think about how we can each support each other, make a positive impact and continue to cultivate a caring culture at PwC.

If you’re looking to join a team that empowers you as an individual, acknowledges your career aspirations and interests, and will provide a tailored training programme, then apply to Capital Projects.
