Meet Jessica, a Senior Associate in our Accounting Services, Tax team. Jessica joined PwC in 2018 and has built a career that she’d describe as full of variety, fast-paced and flexible. She shares insights into her team, how technology is impacting the work they do and the opportunities available at PwC outside of your day-to-day role. Here’s her story…
Tell us about your career and role at PwC?
I joined PwC in September 2018 after graduating from Peninsula Medical School. The opportunities and flexibility available at PwC, as well as the firms’ reputation, stood out to me when applying. I’m now a Senior Associate in the Accounting Services team in Tax. We help clients meet the complexity and risk of their accounting compliance obligations, so they can focus on running their business. I help prepare clients annual statutory accounts, as well as bookkeeping, management reporting and preparing tax returns and computations for complex partnership groups. Every job I work on is different and I love the variety. I get to work with different colleagues from around the firm and different clients each day, including international, FTSE100 and well-known organisations.
Working at PwC, there are so many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of your day-to-day role. I’m part of PwC’s Social Entrepreneurs Club, which is a UK wide network that shares the skills of our people with ambitious social entrepreneurs. In this role, I help to manage PwC’s relationship with Impact Hub Bradford, a social innovation hub and coworking space for local entrepreneurs, and we support them with their local programme SUSTAIN. They developed the programme to help organisations recover in a post-pandemic world and we run masterclasses and coaching sessions for the organisations involved. I’m also on the Community Affairs Committee and we oversee the charity fundraising in the Leeds and Bradford offices. Using my role at PwC to make a difference to the local community is important to me and I’m proud to be able to do this.
What’s it like working in the Accounting Services team?
There’s a real sense of belonging in the team and I think we bring out the best in each other. The team works extremely hard, but we’re all supportive of each other and encourage each other to achieve our goals and overcome any challenges. This helps to create a really positive team environment and culture. Whilst there’s a strong team mentality, we’re also all recognised as individuals and you‘re trusted at PwC to take control of your own time, workload and career. I enjoy working with this level of autonomy.
Technology is impacting the way we work in the Accounting Services team too, both in terms of the tools we use and the people we work with. We’ve developed technologies in the team to automate the process to collect and validate data and we use software such as Alteryx to increase efficiencies in how we manipulate and analyse data. As this use of tech continues to evolve, it provides fantastic opportunities to network and work with different teams across the firm. To be successful, we’ve built a diverse team that combines technology with technical tax and accounting knowledge to meet our clients needs. This diversity of thought encourages even more collaboration and learning from each other.
Do you have any personal hobbies or passions outside of the workplace?
Just like my career, my passions outside of the workplace are varied and keep me busy. I love to get outdoors and my Fiancé and I spend a lot of time in the Lake District walking. We’re currently trying to complete all 214 of the Wainwright Walks and we actually got engaged on top of one of the hills so the Lake District will always be special to me.
I also love to travel and have been lucky enough to spend a month volunteering in Africa. I helped with animal conservation, as well as volunteering in the local maternity wards in Zimbabwe as part of my medical elective.
