School and College Leaver Programme

Tax

Woman in the office

The tax landscape is constantly changing, and you’ll apply your knowledge and expertise to advise a wide range of clients to make informed decisions with significant impact.

From day one, you’ll work with an array of clients to understand their business affairs and discuss how tax rules apply to them. This could be with entrepreneurs or individual employees; advising on complex personal tax issues and implications of international assignments. Or with large multinationals; from local and overseas corporate tax compliance, to the tax implications of business decisions and how they reward their people.

We’ll support you to apply your knowledge, to develop your network and understand the breadth of the tax services we provide to our clients. You’ll also develop key professional and transferable skills right from the start, giving you the foundation to develop your career as an agile and client focused tax professional. But that’s just the start - our Tax practice is a varied and exciting place to be and we pride ourselves on career mobility.

The Tax experience

We ensure you're fully prepared for client engagements, equipped to discuss our complete Tax offering—from traditional processes to revolutionary technologies. Our approach includes a market-leading internal tax training program and an accelerated professional qualifications pathway, enabling you to address client issues early in your career.

You'll also leverage the latest technology, whether communicating with international clients, implementing new pay structures aligned with tax rules, or advising on corporate tax obligations.

You can choose to apply to our Tax teams through two routes; our core Tax programme, where you’ll experience a number of areas of Tax, or through our alternative Tax programmes where you’ll specialise from day one.

Core Tax programme

Working in core Tax gives you the opportunity to rotate across our Direct, and Indirect Tax teams in the first two years of your PwC journey.

This could involve working in Direct Tax to help clients - from FTSE 100 companies and global organisations, to budding entrepreneurs and high-net worth individuals - manage their tax risk and comply with complex legislation.

As part of our Indirect Tax practice, you could be involved in everything from advising clients on the VAT implications of their UK activities to a global project looking at the clients’ supply chain, to considering the impact of case law developments, or advising on a merger or acquisition.

In addition to our core Tax programme, you can choose to apply for a number of other Tax programmes; where you’ll join an individual team from day one.

Joining as a School or College Leaver

Depending on the Tax team you join, you'll enjoy plenty of practical, on-the-job training while studying towards a professional qualification which will vary depending on the programme. Many of our School Leavers will work with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to secure the Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) or study towards the ATT (Association of Tax Technicians) as a core part of their programme.

Along the way you’ll have access to a dedicated Professional Qualifications team, and have access to a strong support network which will include - external Tutors and Talent Coaches, and your career coach, buddies and peers from PwC. All of them will be familiar with what you’re going through, as they’ll have also completed professional qualifications.

Life in Tax

Early in your career, you'll gain invaluable experience across core tax specialisms, building knowledge and a network. By your third year in the core Tax programme, you'll align with a specific part of our Tax practice.

This diverse experience and an agile mindset are crucial in Tax. You'll learn from various clients, develop transferable skills, and contribute your strengths and ideas to foster collaboration within teams.

As a predominantly office-based team, you'll build vital colleague relationships and inclusive environments. We champion "Feel Good Friday" to highlight personal achievements and focus on flexibility to balance work with personal commitments. Our strong team culture and social events reflect this commitment.

The future of Tax

In Tax, data analytics for compliance and consulting will soon be standard, making tax professionals also data analysts. Information once held in paper files can now be collected in seconds, allowing for strategic use of data. We can now analyze entire data sets, leading to quicker, more accurate decisions.

In the coming years, we'll transform tax compliance, enabling future professionals to focus on the logic behind data queries and enhance analytical skills. This will deepen your knowledge of technical tax, client industries, and business processes. It's about working smarter through innovation and technology.
